world building.• Once, humans had magic. Not every human and due to man's superiority complex, this led to all the awful things you can imagine. Subjugation, enslavement, using unpowered humans are guinea pigs.

• Innovation still ran deep throughout unpowered humans, and they invented their own way of fighting back. Created their own items that mimicked magic, things that blocked it. Eventually, technology far outstripped magic and was powerful enough to throttle the magic users, subjugate them instead.

• This was the decisive event that shaped the modern world that Rosa lives in. Magic as an innate part of biology began to die down, unable to contend with constant technological advancement, until eventually, it seemed to be extinct. But one in every few thousand humans still contained some genetic marker that allowed them to develop powers. These people were dubbed the -bloods, with the prefix referring to their abilities (e.g. stormblood, aquablood) or the appearance of their blood (inkblood).

• The rarest and most valuable is the inkblood status, which grants the individual immortality and a lack of aging. These people can only be killed by draining all the blood from their bodies, blood coveted for its ability to reverse aging (thereby extending lifespans). Unlike the other -bloods, inkblood does not have a technological equivalent.

• Humanity's great advantage was their technological advances. This means that society benefits from technology that is beyond our own, much of which is designed to mimic magic. Those who can afford it can have xChips installed into their heads, allowing telepathic communication, or teleportation pods installed in locations they frequently travel. Hover-vehicles are as commonly used as land vehicles, allowing for multiple layers of traffic. The army is equipped with weapons allowing them to imitate the abilities of someone who can magic up fire, lightning, or water.
For those less financially well off, technology isn't quite so flash. Phones are better than our modern day smartphones, transport is more environmentally friendly, but nowhere near as impressive as the higher priced options.

• Socially, a big problem is the disparity between the rich and poor. In large cities such as Dewell, this disparity is particularly visible. High costs of living and an education system that boxes people into a specific career path at too young an age means that many poorer families are trapped in a cycle - unable to let their children go onto expensive higher education as they're needed in the workforce as soon as possible to help support the family financially.

backstory.
Rosa is the oldest child and part of a large, extended family living in the inner city of Dewell in Astaria. Her family live the paycheque to paycheque life, and the kids spend as much time with their aunts, uncles and grandparents as they do their parents. It's a loving family but each additional sibling places extra strain on the family's finances.

Rosa grows up with the peripheral awareness that not all is well, that her parents are trying to make things as normal as possible for her and her siblings. She goes with it, because what else can you do when you're eight years old and don't fully grasp the nuances of finance or have any way to contribute. She helps with her siblings, goes to school, occasionally gets in trouble, like any kid.

• At 14, Rosa has to decide her academic path. While she wants a degree in Engineering, her parents can't afford to continue supporting her education, and insist that she goes to trade school as a mechanic.

• At 15, Rosa discovers she is an Inkblood while at the doctor.

• A month later, she trips and injures herself in the middle of town, which sets rumours aflame about a girl with inky blue blood.

• The rumours put a target on her back, and Rosa soon finds herself fending off various unsuccessful kidnappings, weirding out her friends with her paranoid behaviour and tendency to suddenly take off, but unwilling to confide in them or her family about what's going on.

• During one attempt to kidnap her, Rosa is saved by a Stormblood she runs into while trying to escape. They take her to a nearby Youth Centre and offer to let her hang out with them in exchange for protection, but she turns then down.

• She goes back to her routine life and turns 16. If 16 matters when you're immortal.

• Rosa is lured into a trap by another bunch of wannabe kidnappers while at the farmers market, but is saved once more by the Youth Centre kids.

personality.
• Rosa makes a first impression of being an upbeat, cheerful and energetic young woman. She's outgoing and curious, unafraid to ask questions when she doesn't understand something.

• She is incredibly hardworking, due to her family situation and position as oldest sibling. She doesn't hesitate to roll up her sleeves and get stuck in with chores or help another person if she thinks she can.

• That upbringing means that Rosa has developed a tendency to smile through her troubles, and to keep those troubles to herself, so nobody else is burdened by her worries. She keeps secrets and does her best to solve problems she has without anyone else's input.

• She also has quite a resentful and jealous streak buried deep within her, neither of which she likes. She is very aware of how her family has drawn the short straw when it comes to surviving in their world, and how harshly that has limited her prospects for the life she wants. She combats this with the same smile she wears to hide her worries and concerns.

• Rosa dreams of "normal", and it influences a lot of her behaviour. Normal is the reason it never even crosses her mind to make money from her Inkblood abilities — never considering selling her blood despite the fact that she could quite easily clear her family's financial problems by doing so. Why should she have to do so, when other people simply work for a living?

• She doesn't consider changing the world, she just wants to fit into it and survive it, and wants that for those she loves as well. She tries to help others where she can and easily empathises with those who are down on their luck — after all, she's there, too.

• Rosa's love of food is perhaps the one thing which equals her love of machinery. In a way, it's one of the few things Rosa truly gets for herself — her clothes will eventually go to her younger sisters, her job has always been for her family, and that dream of being a normal teenager who dates others and never has to watch her back remains out of grasp as long as her blood runs blue — but carbs can never be ruined.
